A gas smell in the house, a hiss near an appliance, or a meter that keeps ticking with everything off. Your safety comes first, then we find the leak, repair it and test the whole line before the gas goes back on.
If you smell gas, leave the building and call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 or 911.
Do not switch lights or appliances on or off, use a phone inside, or try to find the leak yourself. Once FortisBC has made the area safe, call us to repair the piping or appliance on your side of the meter.
Natural gas has a smell added to it, often described as rotten eggs or sulphur, so a smell is the most common sign. Others are a hissing or whistling sound near a gas line or appliance, dead plants above a buried line, gas bills that rise for no reason, or a burner with a lazy yellow flame instead of a crisp blue one.
Install carbon monoxide alarms near bedrooms and near gas appliances. A carbon monoxide alarm is not a gas leak detector, but a faulty gas appliance can produce carbon monoxide.
We locate the leak with leak detection solution and a gas detector, then repair or replace the fitting, valve, connector or section of pipe. The line is pressure tested before the appliances are relit, and each appliance is checked as it comes back on.
Gas repairs in BC are done under a gas permit by a licensed contractor. Strata owners cannot take out a homeowner gas permit.
