A hydronic snowmelt system circulates warm fluid through tubing under a driveway, walkway or stairs, so snow and ice melt as they land. On a steep driveway it can be the difference between getting out and staying in.

How snowmelt works

Tubing is laid under the surface and filled with a glycol mix that will not freeze. A boiler or other heat source warms the fluid, and a pump moves it through the loops. Sensors detect snow and temperature so the system runs only when it is needed.

When to install it

Snowmelt is easiest to add when a driveway, walkway or patio is being built or replaced, because the tubing goes in before the concrete, asphalt or pavers. Retrofitting under an existing surface means removing it. If you are planning new paving, talk to us early so the tubing and manifold location are part of the plan.

Servicing an existing system

Snowmelt systems need the glycol checked for strength, the pumps and controls tested, and the sensors cleaned before winter. If part of the area no longer melts, it can be a pump, a valve, air in a loop or a control fault. Most of it can be diagnosed without touching the surface.
