Heating & Boilers · Greater Vancouver
Most heat pumps blow warm air. An air-to-water heat pump heats water instead, so it can run radiant floors, radiators and a hot water tank. For homes that already have hydronic heat, it is a way to move off gas without tearing out the system.
An outdoor unit draws heat from the outside air, even in cold weather, and transfers it to water that circulates through your floors or radiators. Many units can also supply domestic hot water through a storage tank, and some can provide cooling through suitable emitters.
Heat pumps are most efficient at lower water temperatures than a typical boiler runs at. Radiant floors usually suit them well. Radiator systems may need some radiators upsized or added. We check your heat loss, your emitters and your electrical service before recommending one.
Many homes keep the existing boiler as a backup for the coldest days, with controls that decide which runs. That can be the most comfortable and economical setup.
An installation involves the outdoor unit and its pad or wall bracket, piping into the house, a buffer tank where needed, controls, and electrical work by a licensed electrician.
CleanBC Better Homes has offered rebates on air-to-water heat pumps, but programs and eligibility change often. Check betterhomesbc.ca for what is open before you commit.
